Chest Wall Deformity Training Courses
Plan for Training and related information:
- The educational program for chest wall deformity surgery, pneumothorax treatment, and hyperhidrosis surgery—all subspecialties within thoracic surgery—is a comprehensive and immersive course carefully designed to help trainees progress from basic knowledge to advanced surgical proficiency.
- In chest wall deformities, the main focus is on pectus excavatum (sunken chest) surgery, while trainees can also gain experience in pectus carinatum (protruding chest) treatment, both with braces and through surgery. Our hospital performs pectus excavatum repair using the double bar technique, which not only lifts the depressed chest wall but also gently compresses it, allowing for effective correction of asymmetry.
- In pneumothorax, we treat a wide range of cases — from primary spontaneous pneumothorax common in teenagers and young adults, to secondary pneumothorax in elderly patients, and even catamenial pneumothorax in women of reproductive age. Each type is managed with the most appropriate and effective treatment approach.
- For hyperhidrosis, we mainly perform thoracoscopic sympathectomy for palmar (hand) hyperhidrosis. Unlike many hospitals, we usually operate on only one side, which helps to minimize compensatory sweating that can occur after surgery. For plantar (foot) hyperhidrosis, we perform lumbar sympathectomy using a laparoscopic approach — a procedure for which our center holds one of the largest case volumes in the world. For craniofacial (head and face) hyperhidrosis, we generally recommend medical treatment rather than surgery.
- This program is based on the concept of Active Learning, where participants don’t just receive information passively but actively engage in hands-on learning at every stage of the surgical process.
- Trainees will master operating room preparation, learn how to maintain a sterile and organized environment, and understand the key steps in patient preparation before surgery.
- The curriculum goes beyond theory and includes real surgical observations and participation, allowing trainees to apply what they learn immediately. Through direct exposure to various thoracic surgical procedures, participants will gain confidence and be fully prepared to perform essential thoracic surgery tasks in their own countries after completion.
- Covering every step from initial consultation to postoperative follow-up, this program provides a strong foundation for future thoracic surgeons to build their professional expertise.
